Hurricane Katrina Relief

Like most people, I followed the news of the desperation of the American South following the recent hurricane. We talked about our options as a church and we decided that we wanted to do something more tangible than just take a "special offering". Giving money is certainly one way to be compassionate, but it can also keep an unhealthy distance between the giver and the receiver.

We contacted a local ministry called "Loving Hands" that was working with Buckley Air Force Base to provide clothes, toys, and food to the displaced families arriving in Denver. We spread the word and spent a week collecting donations.

I asked Camron, our Compassion Ministry Leader, when he was going to drop the donations off because I wanted to go with him. He said, "Oh, we're not dropping them off. We have too much. They're coming to pick it up with a moving truck."

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18.
